Ahhhhhh! What’s that smell? It’s the sweet fragrance of glitter and vibes in the air!
The island has already begun to practically vibrate with the anticipation of friends and family making their way to the mecca of Cropover 2018. The all-inclusive fetes, the lure of new friends, the giddiness of reunions. The high-speed gyration of bumpers gliding down the Spring Garden Highway to pulsating rhythms, sweaty muscles, sparkling head-pieces and the seething masses of humanity of all shapes, hues, and sizes, sigh. Let’s not forget the endless stories that are this year in the makings…… Quick! Where do we sign-up!
The Cropover 2018, season count-down is on and while many Bajans’ prep game may be tight, there are many of us who still wing it from season to season. We all want the multitude of Cropover events to meet us looking absolutely gorgeous. Let’s face it. Unless you’re Rihanna that takes a bit of prep work, just a bit, there’s a lot of pressure for both males and females alike. To look like you woke up this way or simply slid off the glossy pages of the latest mag is a bit difficult.
However, the first step to any beauty process is knowing that beauty is deeper than just a layer of epithelial. The search for beautifully glowing healthy skin can be a life-long one. So your skincare regime should be completely proactive and routine based. There are real benefits to be had in taking care of your skin. It is, after all the largest and some would wager the most complex organ of your body. Despite what you may have been told, believe it or not, black does crack.
Our skin takes the full brunt of all the external elements. For us living in the Caribbean, that means a healthy daily dose of UV rays but on the day of the Cropover 2018 jump, the battering is at its peak. The combined effects of direct and sustained exposure to the sun, alcohol intake, applied makeup and or body paint, sweat, dirt, paint and or mud (if you do J’ouvert) are all major stresses on the body, and especially on our skin.
Good skin comes down to more than just ‘good’ genes. Smart skincare habits, teamed with great products will have you looking more radiant in a flash. Our skin plays a major role in protecting our bodies. It’s imperative to take the right steps towards healthy, supple skin by nurturing and safeguarding it against daily damage. Environmental damage can result in a myriad of skin issues. There’s premature aging, damaged collagen, hyperpigmentation, acne and in worst cases, skin cancer.
Given that, we have put together an expert beauty guide for those who want to put their best face and body forward for the Cropover season. So here it is.
The first step to better hydration is of course to up your H2O intake. If you’re drinking alcohol, hydration becomes even more important. Drinking water can help to lessen the effects of a hangover. It is best to have water in between your alcoholic beverages as you drink your alcohol in moderation.
Drink water like it’s your 9 to 5. Have some initiative. Go above and beyond the recommended 6-8 glasses of water per day. Also, don’t forget to hydrate your skin from the outside as well.
Use skin creams that contain Vitamin E, Beta-Carotene or Aloe Vera (the acids in aloe eat away dead skin cells and speed up the healing process) such as . When at the beach use a spritzer with rosewater, sandalwood or bergamot essential oils mixed with water. These oils are great for hydrating the skin.
Check the dryness of your skin by scratching a small area on your arm or leg with your fingernail. If it leaves a white mark, your skin is indeed dry and needs moisture. When your skin is extra dry use hydrating masks, such as the Clinique moisture surge moisturizing night mask as part of your routine.
Dancing was always part of my culture growing up in Barbados. When I shot my 1st video I worked really hard with my choreographer to perfect the routines.Rihanna
The skin around your eyes is the thinnest skin on your face. It can easily lose moisture leaving you with fine lines and a dry, wrinkled paper bag texture. Consider a light, hydrating gel eye treatment such as the e.l.f hydrating gel mask.
Hair It Is
Don’t for one minute believe the hype from products advertised to transform your hair to a luxurious coif of curls overnight. Lies they tell!
If you really want to moisturize and strengthen your hair, it takes time, at least four weeks. Work hair treatments into your daily hair-care routine while being careful about the type of shampoos and conditioners you use. Avoid shampoos with harsh surfactants, and look for sulfate-free, cream-based cleansers such as the .
To get and keep your hair healthy, moisture is a top priority. Ensure that you use moisturizers that match your hair’s porosity and texture. We recommend Rodial Dragon’s Blood Hyaluronic Moisturiser SPF 15
Get a Deeper Clean
Use a sonic-powered cleansing brush, like the Michael Todd Beauty Soniclear Elite to apply your cleanser. Using such a brush can help your skin-care products penetrate beneath the surface. This can help them hydrate at a deeper level. It’s important to match your cleansers to your skin type. One of our popular skin cleansers is the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
Exfoliate regularly (i.e., removal of the outermost layer of dead skin cells). You might be stocking up on the latest and greatest, but your skin may not be absorbing the hydration you’re applying.
Exfoliation is key to the removal of the dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin, which can prevent skin-care ingredients from having their desired effect. We love Philosophy Microdelivery Exfoliating Facial Wash for a quick and effective exfoliation.
Elbows need love too. First, exfoliate your elbows in your bath or shower, then apply Murad Age Reform AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser letting them soak for 15 minutes. The acid in the Murad Age Reform AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser provides extra smoothing power.
Be Sun Safe
If gearing up for a day in the sun, steer clear of scented lotions and perfumes. But they smell soooo good….. We know. Sadly scented products can lead to blotchy skin when exposed to the sun. So if you must, please do so sparingly. Otherwise, try our
Lather on a broad-spectrum SPF. Every single day. Yes, even if your makeup has an SPF factor and even if you’ll be in the shade. A good sunblock is your friend, try 100% Pure Everywhere Sun Stick SPF 30
A foundation with a high SPF is always a great product to have in your beauty bag. You could try the NARS All Day Luminous
Actively Fight Free Radicals
Have a couple of antioxidant-rich serums on rotation in your skincare routine to give you a topical boost and some extra support. (Antioxidants work wonders in checking those aforementioned free radicals)
Take (or apply) your vitamins
Use a rich, vitamin-infused foundation such as Tarte Maracuja Oil to maximize daily hydration and protect against, yep you guessed it, those free radicals.
Nourish Your Smooch
Would you believe us if we told you that your lips are covered with skin? Yes boo! So they need as much care as you give to the skin on the rest of your body. Using lip balms such as e.l.f Cosmetic Gotta Glow Lip Tint and hydrating lipsticks are essential to an even-toned, smooth and soft pucker. Try these products from e.l.f Cosmetics They can nourish the most parched lips.
Finally and most importantly, have a great Cropover season in Barbados!
Never been to Barbados for Cropover!! You owe it to yourself to visit sometime. If not this year, put it in your plans for the following. Trust me you will now be disappointed.
